From approved invoice to paid receipt

Agentic commerce is reaching the work between businesses: paying an invoice that someone has already approved. That makes the handoff between permission, payment and proof worth checking now.

The development

On October 20, Visa, BILL and Billtrust announced a pilot for agents to pay approved invoices through supplier portals. Visa says it is live and processing transactions for participating BILL buyers and Billtrust suppliers.

The described flow uses agent authentication, tokenized payment credentials and controls tied to the buyer’s approved instruction. The agent executes eligible, already-approved payments; it does not decide which invoices the buyer should pay.

This is a reported live pilot, not evidence that every business can enable the feature today. We verified the announcement, not a transaction inside the pilot.

What it means for your business

Our reading: the near-term opportunity includes completing familiar work across existing systems. A business does not need to hand over every purchasing decision to find value in an agent finishing an approved task.

Whatever platform you use, ask where a valid customer instruction still requires someone to copy information, open another portal or chase a receipt. That handoff is a candidate for automation when the receiving system can recognize the permitted action and return usable evidence of completion.

For sellers, a successful payment should connect to the correct invoice, order or service request. For buyers, the record should make it possible to tell whether the approved task is finished or still needs attention. Those are useful requirements even before you choose an agent integration.

One practical check this week

Trace one recently completed payment using records you are authorized to inspect. Start with its approval, then find the exact invoice or order, the payment record and the final receipt. Can your team match them without guessing from an amount or a timestamp?

Write down any missing link and the system that owns it. Then ask what a caller should do if payment succeeds but the receipt never arrives: retrieve the existing result, wait, or escalate? The answer should be clear enough that an automated retry does not create a second payment.

Choose one gap to fix and repeat the trace. This is a records check, so it does not require placing a new order or changing your payment provider. Keep customer records and credentials private.

For API and service businesses

Use a completed service request for the same check: connect the customer’s accepted terms, payment and delivered result. Publish clear recovery instructions so an agent can retrieve an existing result after a timeout. A charge alone does not tell the caller that the job is done.
